  2. Herreshoff Fishers Island 23

    Herreshoff Fishers Island 23

    Plattsburgh, New York, Stati Uniti
    1932
    €115.959

Herreshoff Manufacturing Company #1225 As the only centerboard version of the famed Fishers Island 23 class built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, CRUSADER is a true one-of-a-kind.  Her design by Sidney DeWolf Herreshoff was based on the long and narrow Scandinavian square-meter sloops, also known as “Skerry Cruisers” popular in the early 20th century.  Fifteen of the Fishers Island 23’s were built in the 1930’s, advertised by the Herreshoff Company as “fast, seaworthy, easily handled, with good room in the cockpit for a large party and enough room in the cabin for two people on short cruises.” For one particular client the 4’6” draft of the FI-23’s was prohibitively deep for the shoal waters of Great South Bay, NY.  For this gentleman Sydney Herreshoff designed a custom centerboard configuration with a reduced draft of 2’ 11” and the max beam increased by 9 inches.  This custom boat, named CRUSADER, was launched at HMC on October 1, 1932. Fast forward to 2007, when boatbuilder John Hutchison discovered CRUSADER in need of serious help.  Over four years he completed an extensive, 5000 man-hour keel-up restoration resulting in her return to “as new or better” condition. CRUSADER’s high-aspect sail plan allows her to be easily single-handed in light to moderately heavy conditions. Her self-tending foresail makes for quick tacks and excellent upwind angles.  With her custom transport trailer, mast stepping tri-pod, and electric auxiliary propulsion, CRUSADER is an incredibly versatile boat. You can learn more about CRUSADER in the book HERRESHOFF - American Masterpieces, in WoodenBoat Magazine #220 Currents, or by contacting Alec Brainerd.   Highlights of 2008-2011 Restoration -Restoration of hull shape and sheer line -Replacement of 88 tapered, white oak frames -Replacement of original mahogany planking with Alaskan Yellow Cedar -All new floor timbers and steam bent White Oak backbone -Original Douglas Fir shear clamps repaired and reinstalled. -Original lead keel, deadwood and rudder post reinstalled. -Original transom and stem repaired and reinstalled. -All wood coated on all sides with Smith’s Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer (CPES) -All mechanical fasteners throughout replaced with new silicon bronze. -Original mahogany shear strakes repaired and reinstalled. -Hull faired and painted with three coats of Interlux Barrier Coat 2-part epoxy primer. -New ¾” Okoume plywood structural bulkhead at mast / chainplate section.  -Interior bronze gusset plates connecting chainplates to frames, planking and bulkhead. -Deck of two layers Dynel fabric over scarfed ½” Okoume plywood and white oak beams -Interlux Interdeck polyurethane non-skid low-gloss paint on deck and cabin top. -Original companionway bulkhead fitted with new mahogany doors and bronze hinges -New Honduran mahogany coamings/house sides with dovetailed oak beams. -Housetop of ¼” T&G cedar with 3/8” Okoume plywood and and Dynel/epoxy. -Original mahogany house-top nosing and main deck toerail refurbished -New replica deck hatch -All original deck hardware refurbished and reinstalled -New centerboard and rudder of Okoume plywood with fiberglass/epoxy -Original tiller refinished and reinstalled. -Original hollow spruce mast and solid boom refinished. -New jib club and spinnaker pole made from original drawings.  -Original spar/rig hardware refurbished and reused. -10 coats Epifanes Varnish on all brightwork   Since her complete rebuild/restoration, CRUSADER has been maintained at the highest imaginable standard, fair-weather day-sailing and racing from Plattsburgh, NY where she has placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in recent years in the Lake Champlain Mayor’s Cup Regatta.  In 2011 she participated in Herreshoff Classic Yacht Regatta, in Bristol, R.I.   Equipment Transport:       -2008 Viking-Spirit 7000# GVWR Float On/Off Sailboat Trailer with hydraulic brakes.      -Tri-pod for stepping/un-stepping mast without need for a crane     Aux Drive/Electrical:  48V Electric, 6HP, custom Wolfe E-Boat auxiliary in-board drive. 5. Herreshoff New York 30

    Herreshoff New York 30

    Bristol, Rhode Island, Stati Uniti
    1905
    €334.994

Commissioned by members of the New York Yacht Club and designed and built by Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, the New York 30’s were launched in 1905 and quickly became the most significant and beloved one-design class in the history of the New York Yacht Club. Their impact on the yachting world has been extensive and the individual histories of each yacht, remarkable. Today many continue their racing careers throughout New England and the Mediterranean. NY-30 #12 ROWDY was completely rebuilt in 2011-2014 in Bristol, RI to the highest yacht standard.  She has been faithfully restored to original Herreshoff specifications and configurations and is now as strong or stronger then when originally launched.    The restoration included the replacement of 95% of the frames and floor timbers, all deck beams and deck, a complete new cabin house, new hatches, a complete new interior to the layout of 1905, and new rig.  (gaff rig design of 1905 but with the improved spar design of 1917),  Further improvements include hollow spars and diesel engine installation. All fasteners in ROWDY are new Silicon Bronze. All wood used in the restoration is as specified in the original Herreshoff scantlings with the exception of adding ¼ Okoume Plywood to the decks for strength, water tightness and longevity. ROWDY is currently stored indoors and ready for commissioning.  A full survey and detailed description of the rebuild are available upon request.   Shipping to Europe available.

  7. Herreshoff Fish Class

    Herreshoff Fish Class

Sakonnet Harbor, Rhode Island, Stati Uniti
    1916
    €38.567

SEA ROBIN (HMCo #807) was commissioned in 1916 by Bertram G. Work as SARDINE and built by Herreshoff Manufacturing Company of Bristol, RI.   She was purchased by JP Morgan in 1917, renamed SEA ROBIN and presented to his son Junius upon his return from Europe following his service in WW I.  The half model shown came with the boat at the time of its delivery. SEA ROBIN is one of only 23 boats in the original Seawanhaka fleet, and of those 23 boats only 9 are extant and can be traced back to their original hull number.  This is a rare opportunity indeed! The Fish Class is and enlarged version of the ubiquitous Herreshoff 12 ½, with the same virtues of stability, rough water ability, good looks, and excellent handling characteristics. While she is only 4’ longer than the 12 ½, she has twice the displacement and thus, in real terms, is twice as big.  The Fish is generally a fine, handy, compact boat that will keep the sailing fun even when conditions are less than optimum. She will sail fast at moderate angles of heel, and like her smaller cousins features a large, deep cockpit that will be reassuring for folks of all ages and will be particularly good for couples with small children. For the more adventurous, SEA ROBIN is equipped with a small galley, bunks, and a full cockpit tent for cruising - which the current owners have done regularly.  The cuddy cabin allows for storage space and some privacy for use of a head or bucket.  She also comes with a 2hp auxiliary outboard motor.  SEA ROBIN was rebuilt in the 1980's by Ed McClave and Ben Philbrick. She is marconi rigged and will be sailing this summer.

  8. Herreshoff Buzzards Bay 18

    Herreshoff Buzzards Bay 18

    Rockport, Maine, Stati Uniti
    2013
    €150.318

Only 5 Buzzards Bay 18s were built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company during the winter of 1903/1904 for the Beverly Yacht Club where they were known as the K Class.  BESHERTE is the second of two full-keel Buzzards Bay 18 re-creations meticulously built by the craftsmen at Artisan Boatworks in Rockport, Maine, where she was launched in 2013.  BESHERTE features edge-glued cedar planking over steam-bent oak frames with a laminated mahogany backbone. She’s auxiliary powered by a Beta 14-hp inboard diesel, which is completely hidden from view within the cabin. GMT Composites of Rhode Island designed and built the carbon-fiber mast, which is faux painted to simulate Sitka spruce, of which the booms and gaff are constructed. The carbon mast allows BESHERTE to be sailed without running backstays. This feature, in combination with a full-length jib club, makes the entire rig easy to singlehand. BESHERTE is also fast; having recently won 1st place at the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta (Gaff & Schooner Division) in 2018 and 1st place in the Camden Classic Cup (Daysailer Division) in 2019. Maintained by her builders at Artisan Boatworks since new, BESHERTE remains in perfect condition.  2019/20 seasonal paint, varnish, and storage are included, as is spring delivery, launching, and rigging anywhere in the Northeast.
