TUMBLEWEED is a fully factory finished 2008 Outremer 42. She was purchased by her current owners in April of 2015 in Tahiti. TUMBLEWEED was sailed to Hawaii and then Seattle where she received extensive updates and upgrades. TUMBLEWEED sailed to Mexico late in 2019 and has cruised the Sea of Cortez for the last two years. TUMBLEWEED is US duty paid and imported and fully ready for extended cruising after servicing the liferaft. Compare the extensive equipment list of this Outremer 42 to other boats. TUMBLEWEED is one of the nicest performance cruising catamarans at this price available in North America.
These Gerard Danson-designed Outremer built in the 2000’s are respected and sought after world voyaging catamarans. The Outremer 42 was designed as the smallest and most manageable model in the Outremer range. The bridgedeck cabin space is relatively large compared to the “bubble” tops on older models providing ample galley/salon/nav desk space. The Outremer formula for success is simple: narrow hulls, strong and simple construction, powerful sailplans, daggerboards for windward performance, and low maintenance exteriors and interiors. Desirable elements include Volvo D2 engines, skegs to protect the props and rudders and allow for beaching, anodized spars vs. painted spars, no exterior wood (except for the cockpit sole), and substantial bridgedeck clearance.
TUMBLEWEED’s owners are meticulous and knowledgeable sailors who have updated and maintained CHARM with using the best equipment and Pacific Northwest vendors.
TUMBLEWEED is a factory-finished Outremer. Bulkheads and furniture are constructed from panels of foam-cored plywood faced with white laminate; strong, light, and easy to clean. Varnished plantation-grown teak trim is used for countertop and shelf fiddles, ring frames, and on overhead staving. The cabin sole is a faux teak and ebony on foam cored panels; all fully removable to access bilge areas. All lights are LED and cabin fans are fitted throughout. Overhead hatches and hull side ports are fitted with Oceanaire Skyscreens. Drawer and cabinet fronts are opaque acrylic with white plastic hinges and white rotary latches. Hull sides are covered with white laminate in the passageways and salon. Padded white vinyl covers hull sides and the overhead in staterooms. Seams are neatly caulked with grey sealant. All elements combine to make a bright, easy to maintain, durable and contemporary interior.
TUMBLEWEED has an ideal layout for world cruising with three staterooms, two heads, and a dedicated shower stall. The galley is located along the aft bulkhead of the salon. A dinette is forward to starboard. The nav station is to port. The port hull has a wide single berth forward. A head is centrally located/inboard of the daggerboard casing. Aft is a stateroom with double berth. The starboard hull is dedicated to the owner with a double berth aft. A centrally located storage/work room is inboard of the daggerboard trunk. A head is forward with a separate stall shower.
Sliding glass doors open the cockpit to the accommodation space. The galley is along the aft bulkhead of this central living area, taking full advantage of the raised cabin’s maximum headroom. To starboard, two large stainless-steel sinks are mounted in the white laminate countertop. A single lever mixer faucet serves these sinks. A three-burner gas stove with pot clamping rail is outboard of the sinks. Two overhead dish cabinets are above. Thoughtful details including a magnetic knife holder, stainless-steel spice rack, task lights, Nespresso rack, and an overhead opening hatch make the galley a joyful location to prepare meals and clean up. Storage cabinets below the sinks and inboard of the sinks are fitted with shelves and bins. An SMEV gas oven and pot/pan storage drawer are below the stove. To port of the sliding door is a smaller countertop. With storage cabinets above and front-loading fridge and freezer below.
The dining table is mounted on telescoping pedestals, transforming the dinette into a sleeping berth. Surrounding windows provide good exterior sight lines while seated. Storage bins are located below the settee.
The navigation station is to port of the dinette. A Herman Miller Aeron chair allows one to sit at the angled chart table or the dinette. A wide shelf wraps the along the curved cabintop above the electronics console and dinette. Excellent seated exterior sight lines allow one to spend much of their watch offshore seated at the nav station checking weather or sending/receiving emails. The nav console is comprised of three removable black panels. DC switches, bilge pump controls, battery monitor, tank level monitor, inverter/charger remote control, stereo, VHF, SSB, engine control panels, and chartplotter are all flush mounted in the console. A flex-arm chart light, cabin fan, and nav tool drawer complete this space.
From the salon area, stairs lead into the port hull. The guest stateroom is aft through a white privacy door. Immediately inboard is an open hanging space for clothes above a drawer and locker with a shelf above. Two narrow shelves run along the outboard hull side acting as stiffeners and providing open storage. The double berth is oriented fore and aft. A narrow bookshelf is mounted inboard above the berth. Two cabin fans, an opening port, an overhead hatch, 220V and 12V outlets, and reading lights complete this stateroom.
Proceeding forward in the port hull passageway, two narrow mid-height shelves run along the hull sides acting as longitudinal stiffeners. Fitted plastic storage bins organize belongings, food, and on these shelves in both hulls. The port head is inboard of the centrally located daggerboard trunk and entered through a locking privacy door. A molded fiberglass sink/vanity cabinet is forward with a single lever hot/cold faucet. A narrow shelf is above the sink and an oval shaving mirror is at eye level. Two open shelves are inboard above an emergency escape hatch. Aft is a manual flush head. An overhead hatch and LED bar light complete this space.
The port forward stateroom is fitted with a wide single berth. Storage space is beneath the berth and two bookshelves run along the hull sides. An overhead hatch, two opening hull side ports, cabin fan, 220V outlet and lights complete this cabin.
The starboard hull has an owner’s stateroom aft and a head forward. The aft starboard stateroom has a double berth oriented fore and aft. After descending the starboard companionway steps into the passageway, one turns aft and enters this stateroom through a privacy door. An open hanging locker with shelves above and below is inboard. Outboard are narrow shelves along the hull sides. An overhead hatch, two opening hull ports, cabin fan, reading and dome lights, 220V outlet, and flat screen TV complete this stateroom.
The work/storage room is just forward of the companionway inboard of the daggerboard trunk. An array of shelves and bins hold tools, parts, and consumables. An escape hatch is inboard, below a narrow shelf.
The owner’s head/shower is forward. Just though the privacy door and inboard is a front loading 220V washing machine with two shelves above it. Through another ring frame is the head compartment. An electric flush head is aft/inboard. Forward is a vanity with oval sink and faucet. An oval mirror and LED bar light are above the sink. An overhead hatch, a hull side port, cabin fan, overhead light, and 220V outlet finish this space. All the way forward and through another ring frame is the shower stall. A curtain closes this space. A shower head, hose, mixer, adjustable shower bar, teak grating, dome light, and shelves are fitted.

DECK & HULL:
TUMBLEWEED has a white gel-coat hull with black antifouling bottom paint, orange sheer and boot stripes. The hull and deck are bonded together with an outward turning flange. A Goiot aluminum toe rail section is bolted to this flange and services as a rub rail. This hull/deck flange also knocks down spray when surfing down waves at high speed. Hull construction is vacuum laminated with foam sandwich using vinylester resin. The hull centerline is solid laminate. Symmetric daggerboards in central trunks minimize draft while providing superb windward sailing performance. Substantial skegs are fitted just forward of the props for protection and beaching. Large spade rudders are aft of the propellers. Two Moonlight opening ports are fitted above the rub rail on each hull side. Escape hatches are located above the waterline, inboard in each hull.
The deck and cabintop are also white gelcoat to minimize heat in the tropics. Molded-in nonskid tops the decks and cabintop. Four large and two smaller Moonlight hatches in the deck provide light, ventilation, and emergency egress. The cabintop is fitted with fixed smoked acrylic ports, two forward-facing opening square hatches and two round ports aft. Cowl vents supplement ventilation from the hatches. Double lifelines run between stanchions on each side. A low-profile white plastic toe rail is fastened below the lifelines. Eight large aluminum mooring cleats are fitted to the deck edge eliminating the need for chocks. Stainless steel grab rails are fitted to the scoop sterns and atop the cabin. A fiberglass catwalk connects the forward crossbeam and bridgedeck on the centerline. The anchor windlass, chain storage box, anchor roller, and passarelle storage trough are fabricated into this structure. In 2019, the two trampolines were replaced with Dyneema tramps.
Even with its narrow hulls, deck-accessible storage is voluminous on this Outremer 42. Starting forward, two small top-opening blow lockers house fenders, chain snubber, trash while offshore, and other gear. Large “climb into” bow lockers are accessed through Moonlight deck hatches on each side. The aft bulkhead of these lockers is watertight; a huge safety feature for collision. A bridgedeck locker forward of the mast is accessed through four curved, hinged hatches. Storage in the cockpit is below the settees.
Living and sailing a cruising catamaran is most frequently spent in the cockpit. TUMBLEWEED’s cockpit is well configured for both needs. One accesses the cockpit from either side deck via a large step/platform. The port step serves as a helm station platform providing excellent visibility of the sails and all four corners when docking. An upholstered helm seat with backrest is fitted. A cockpit table is to starboard. A rigid carbon/foam bimini was custom fabricated and mounts on a stainless steel frame. A clear canvas windshield connects the bimini to the cabintop to shelter the cockpit forward. Shade canvas completely encloses the cockpit. The helm station has a removable canvas top.

Simple, accessible, reliable systems are a huge component of the Outremer 42’s success as a cruising catamaran. The engines are in aft compartments with watertight bulkheads, fully separate from the staterooms and living areas. One can climb into the engine space, aft of the engine and access all engine and steering components. Outremer did not use liner construction on these boats. All systems, wiring, and plumping are accessible. TUMBLEWEED is a proven world cruiser and is ready for more. Both engines have been well-maintained since new. Saildrive diaphrams were replaced in 2018.
