Building and history
Ballast centerboarder, polyester sandwich, Zeus 45 type, built in 1979/1981 in France.
Designed by GILBERT SAINT-BLANCAT and build by Yvon Le Yendecker, in a polyester cored sandwich and Divinicel foam (C-Flex). Monolithic bilges (3 cm). The whole hull structure is supported by "omegas". Except the centerboard case, that is going all through up to the deck, there's no structural bulkhead (inside arrangements are open and modifiable).
A word from the owner
We bought the boat in 4th hand, in 2017 in Raiatea and sailed with family (3 children) for 1 year in the different archipelagos of Polynesia (Islands of the Society, Tuamotus, Gambier, Marquesas Islands).
Centerboard. A keel embryo built into the hull (and weighted with lead) for a minimum draft at 1.2 m (1.3 loaded). A daggerboard is located in its centerboard case which crosses up to the bridge. The lifting system is a simple 5-strand hoist that can be easily handled from the cockpit.
The drift rise time is very short. The very simple system is always visible and accessible. In 13 years there has been a single drifting incident (clothespin in the centerboard case) that has resolved itself on mooring. The raft is 2.5 m or even 3 m, but it does not bring anything too much down the daggerboard. The daggerboard can be easily removed for maintenance, boat afloat, leaving it running under the boat, it is then back on the deck with a halyard. It is laminated wood and is lightly weighted to sink. The sailboat sails perfectly without daggerboard and remains maneuvering, even if the upwind course is not optimal with just the keel embryo. However, we can beat to anchor in 1.5 m of water. 2 daggerboard of the aft platform were installed, allowing to stabilize the boat well and to relieve the pilot downwind.
Real sailboat that sails easily with few knots of wind. She is seaworthy, reliable and rustic. The maneuver is easy and "human size" (maneuvers made by teens without problem). In 13 years and a lot of navigation, she has always had a good and reassuring behavior. The boat is completely self-sufficient for water and power in navigation or anchorage and in port. The boat is maintained and is in good condition. Like any boat, it requires before any major navigation a general check. Inside, the paints and varnishes, are maintained regularly.
The Zeus 45 allowed us to live and sail aboard 5, a couple and 3 children (7, 9 & 13 years) for 1 year. Everyone has his space on board. Previous owners had spent 12 years on board, also with 3 children (5 to 18 years old).
