Descrizione
SPIRIT is a well-known, well-loved and well-maintained sailing vessel! Since her construction in 1977, she has only had a total of four owners; most all of which have kept in touch and shared stories of her remarkable travels and voyages.
A two-cabin, center cockpit vessel, she can comfortably accommodate up to eight people from the forward cabin, saloon, and aft cabin. The galley is designed for entertaining and easy serving to guests and crew either at the saloon table or in the cockpit.
Underway she is comfortable and can maintain speed with the 150 hp Cummins 4BT; her cruising speed is around 7kts, with a fuel burn of 1.25gph. Under sail, she comes alive and can make way at 9 or 10 kts – even more, under favorable conditions! Being a ketch rig, she can be trimmed for a very balanced helm, and can easily be sailed by a cruising couple. She has a dry cockpit with the integrated dodger and bimini, and has a stable ride with the center cockpit.
She received regular haul-outs, usually in three-year intervals, for fresh bottom paint and cutlass bearing inspection – and the occasional waxing of the topsides as needed. Her last haulout was in 2019, and a new cutlass bearing was installed, the engine and shaft aligned, along with bottom paint. Regular bottom cleaning (but not too much!) has kept the Ultima SR 60 (paint) fresh and active.
Pre-departure for Mexico in November of 2019, a survey was completed. The insurance valuation was assessed at 195k! A rigging inspection was also completed, and the standing rigging passed inspection for an offshore/coastal cruise. With all the amenities - air conditioning, heating, custom mattress in the owner’s stateroom, freezer, refrigerator, watermaker, etc., - SPIRIT can take you where you want to go in comfort and style.
Accommodations
The aft cabin Owner’s stateroom is spacious and comfortable. Plenty of natural light and lighting, ventilation, and climate control (air conditioning when it’s HOT, and heating when it’s chilly), allows for a luxurious experience aboard. A Caframo three-speed fan, or the Mermaid unit, provides air circulation. The custom, Handcraft Mattress Company mattress, provides an excellent night’s sleep while underway or at anchor. There is a hanging locker, along with multiple drawers and an expansive set of cabinets on the starboard side of the stateroom. For catching a nap during the day, Oceanair blinds reduce the light and glare in the cabin. A door separates the stateroom from the rest of the cabin for privacy and quiet.
The forward cabin has comfortable cushions, plenty of light and lighting, ventilation, and climate control (provided by the Mermaid unit in the main saloon). Plenty of storage space in the forward cabin is provided by two (2) hanging lockers, multiple drawers, and a bookshelf. There is plenty of room overhead while laying down so one does not feel like they’re squeezed in; spacious, the berth easily accommodates two adults with ample room.
Heads
The aft-cabin main head is unique in having a well-lit, separate shower. This allows for a clean, easy-to-maintain, showering experience while onboard. Combine this with the watermaker, and the luxuries of shoreside living follow you at sea; no need to ration water! Ample storage is found in the cabinet behind the head and under the sink. A VacuFlush head allows for ease of flush. Overhead, a Nicro Day/Night ventilation fan is fit in the aft head for fresh air circulation.
The forward head also has ample storage; a large cabinet behind the head and storage under the sink provide plenty of room. Two entrances, one from the saloon, and the other from the forward cabin, allow easy access for guests. A VacuFlush head allows for ease of flush. Like the aft head, a Nicro Day/Night ventilation fan maintains fresh air circulation.
Galley
A very user-friendly, safe at sea galley is appointed to the Gulfstar 50. Excellent for entertaining, and handholds for safety while preparing meals underway, the “chef” can easily be a part of the conversation in the saloon and the cockpit, all the while preparing delicious meals. The Force 10 three-burner/oven is efficient and safe; gimbaled for use while underway, and locked in while at anchor or shoreside. The well-insulated box and Vitrifrigo refrigeration (with plenty of lighting overhead to see in the box) keep perishables cool and fresh. There is plentiful storage for cookware, utensils, plates, and provisions in the galley. Behind the stove is storage; aft of the galley counter there are two cabinets with shelving for storage; under the galley sink is a large storage area; drawers forward of the stove for utensils; and under the cabin sole are two (2) storage areas. The double sink allows for efficient clean-up after a meal, and, to reiterate – no worries of rationing water in the galley – the watermaker provides all that you need!

Deck and Hull
The deck layout is designed for safety at sea; there are handrails on the entire cabin top, along with waist-high (30”) solid stainless steel life rails from where one steps out of the cockpit, continuing around the entire aft section of the vessel. Standard lifelines, waist-high (29”), run forward from the boarding gate to the bow pulpit. Regarding deck space, there is plenty for entertaining and lounging at anchor. The bow pulpit has an integrated seat for a great view in calm conditions underway, or for quiet moments relaxing and taking in the view while on the hook. Four (4) Lewmar opening hatches on deck (one for each cabin, two in the saloon) allow for fresh air to ventilate throughout, or, while open at night, star gazing from the comforts of one’s berth.
