In the spirit of tradition Brooklin Boat Yard is pleased to introduce an 82’ cruising sloop with classic lines that respects the design aesthetic of Joel White, the yard’s late founder and prominent designer. “The importance of design was engrained in me early on” says Steve White, son of Joel White and company President. “We have a team of in-house designers working to createworkable solutions and shop drawings in support of the various designers’ clients who we are currently building boats for. I thought it important to challenge the team and demonstrate our own creative capabilities, generating designs that exemplify our philosophy: designs that are attractive and classic in style but with modern underbodies and appendages and modern sail handling: designs that are efficient to sail or power and designs that are efficient to construct.”
This first is the attached 82’ sloop that got her inspiration from a 74’ ketch named Dragonera that Joel designed in 1992. She is a flush deck, pilothouse design. She was intended to be an all-around, ocean going cruiser with a good turn of speed. She is still owned by her original owner and has traveled back and forth from Maine to the southern oceans every year of her nearly 25 year life span, and is ready to go for another 25 at least.
The new 82’ sloop is a twin cockpit design with slightly raised pilothouse for additional light down below. The interior layout has the Owner forward with island berth and three additional guest cabins each with heads and separate showers. The main cabin has an open galley for social interaction, generous dining table and casual seating and also a proper navigation area and wet locker adjacent to the companionway. The boat can be sailed by a group of experienced sailors but the port quarter cabin abaft the galley can be used by a professional crew, such as a husband and wife/captain and chef team or could be configured with bunk berths.
The twin cockpit design keeps the center cockpit strictly for social sailing and all sail handling led to the aft working cockpit. The twin hydraulic headsail furlers provide a working jib on the inner stay and a reaching sail on the outer stay and the mainsail is to be handled with in boom furling.
Construction is to be cold molded laminated wood utilizing WEST SYSTEM epoxy resin and vacuum bagging techniques, which is the yard’s standard practice. Mast and boom are to be of carbon fiber, as well as a carbon fiber rudder. The yacht would take 18 months to construct and comes with an estimated price of $4,800,000US, depending on the complexity of the desired interior finish and equipment.
