Angele knows her way. Under former stewardship she was owned by John Neal, named Mahina Tiare II, an offshore training vessel sailing the Oceans of the world. During her current ownership she has been plying the waters of the Pacific NW with more than a dozen cruises up and down the Washington coast and into the Salish Sea. She is ketch rigged with easy sail handling and has the HR installed hard dodger. Previous owners replaced the teak decks with Synthetic Tek Dek, which look great. No fussing over missing bungs here. Angele shows pride of ownership, consistently upgraded and well maintained.

Between 1980 and 1991, 225 of these Olle Enderlein-designed Hallberg-Rassy 42s were built.  Angele is hull #70. Their rugged construction and respectable passage speeds (long waterline and ample sail area) make them popular world cruising yachts. John Neal and Amanda Swan-Neal of Mahina Tiare Expeditions went around Cape Horn and to Antarctica on this very HR42. Many have circumnavigated. The flush deck, high freeboard hull offers plenty of interior volume with nicely balanced storage and living space. The low center cockpit provides great protection behind the glass windshield with hard dodger and full enclosure. The flush, uncluttered deck with raised caprails makes for easy movement and sailing handling in even the worst weather. Rugged, capable, and elegant, this sought after Hallberg-Rassy yacht offers a wonderful local or world cruising sailboat at an affordable price.

Accommodations

Descending from the center cockpit companionway, you enter the main salon. First class workmanship using select mahogany is Hallberg-Rassy’s trademark. Angele’s interior has been well cared for. In the HR tradition, the teak and holly sole is covered by snap down carpeting (new 2011). To port in the salon is an L-shaped 7’ settee that converts into a double berth once the backrest is raised. Adjacent to starboard is a 6’8” settee which also converts to a larger berth when the settee is raised. The blue upholstery is in excellent condition. There are shelves and lockers outboard and above the settees for storage as well as storage under the settees. The solid mahogany table has two fold down leaves with storage in the center. Aft of the salon and to starboard is the U-shaped ocean-going galley with two bin stainless sink, deep top loading fridge and freezer, Force 10 three burner stove/oven and ample storage. Aft of the salon to port is the full-size forward facing navigation station. Going forward to port is a large head with separate stand up shower. Across from the head and to starboard is a double door-hanging locker with shelf and cabinet above. Forward of this is the forward cabin. The forward cabin has a traditional v-berth with an infill cushion to make a full size berth. Overhead there is ample locker storage space. There is also storage available below the bunk as well. Going aft through the port side aft passageway, there is excellent access to the engine compartment beneath the center cockpit. Aft of the passageway is the spacious aft cabin with double berth. The ensuite head with shower is located to starboard.

Hull & Deck

Angele is a flush deck center cockpit cruiser built for extended blue water cruising. She is built to Lloyd’s specifications. She has a long fin keel for directional stability with a full skeg protecting the rudder. Her hull construction is solid fiberglass with an encapsulated iron ballast keel. The decks are fiberglass sandwich with a foam core and plywood is used in areas of high compression loading. The hull to deck joint is glassed together in way of the raised bulwark.   In 2005 the teak decks were replaced with synthetic Tek which overlays the fiberglass deck. A molded-in rubrail capped with bronze striker plate protects the hull sides port and starboard. A teak caprail is fastened to the raised bulwark and stanchion bases are placed in sockets in the bulwark. The hull is white gel-coat and accented with broad blue sheer stripe and blue bootstripe. The rudder blade is fiberglass over a stainless steel frame with bronze rudder bearings. Two scuppers are fitted at deck low points and drain to below the waterline. A large overboard draining bow locker is access through a deck lid. The anchor chain, and propane bottles are located in this locker. A top opening stern locker is located aft by the transom.

The cockpit is very well protected and equally comfortable for lounging or sailing. Like all Hallberg-Rassy yachts, the cockpit is placed relatively low in the boat which makes for a nicer motion in a seaway and also allows the boom to be placed lower to keep mainsail center of effort low. Also, the companionway ladder is shorter and transition from cockpit to interior is much easier. The cockpit seats are overlaid with Tek Dek and a removable teak grating covers the cockpit sole. The signature Hallberg-Rassy hard dodger with opening center window section provides the ultimate protection for the cockpit. The cockpit coamings are wide and capped with Tek Dek, making them comfortable for sitting on. Varnished outer chart tables are on either side of the companionway and sailing, navigation, and engine instruments are mounted below the windshield. No lines penetrate this area keeping this forward cockpit area sheltered and dry even when beating into large seas.
